Alexander Technique teacher Barbara Conable spent many years working with musicians in pain. What she noticed through this work was that almost all of their discomforts came from a lack of understanding of how to use their bodies. She realized that if we know how our bodies are actually constructed, we can move with ease, allowing our muscles to function in the way they were designed. She devised the term Body Mapping to describe this idea.
Body Mapping is based on the premise that we each have a subconscious map in our minds that guides our movement. When that map is incorrect, our movements reflect that inaccuracy. When we learn through the study of our own anatomy, and we learn to develop awareness of movement or lack of movement using our kinesthetic sense, we can uncover ease and freedom in all of our activities.
The Andover Educators is “a not for profit organization of music educators committed to saving, securing, and enhancing musical careers by providing accurate information about the body in movement.” We are trained to teach Body Mapping and to train others.
